Saint Athan's War
Still struggling with refugees, nobles turned on their neighbors and war broke out across the kingdom. This time, however, the Crown was able to respond. The Royal Army marched across the kingdom, shutting down wars and settling scores between neighbors. The King took the opportunity to install allies where power vacuums appeared and, after five years, Saint Athan's War ended with the birth of the King's first son and loyal or chastened noble houses across the kingdom.

Refugee Crisis
The refugee crisis dominated the shaky peace that followed the Bread War, and seven years later, war broke out again when Saint Athan was executed by one of the King's barons. Athan had played a large role both in the famine and refugee crisis, and was loved by the common people. Other nobles took advantage and used it as an excuse to seize the executing noble's lands.

The Bread War
The Crown didn't have the resources to spare to send armies to everywhere there were uprisings, so local dukes and counts and barons had to suppress the revolts on their own, and then, already whipped into war mode, some took the opportunity to attack their neighbors. The Bread War lasted about ten years, ending 13 years ago. The Crown was able to broker peace through negotiation and bribery. One duke's holdings, however, were lost entirely, and over the next ten years a steady stream of refugees bled out, which did nothing to calm tensions.
The future King fought in the bread war as a knight, and was taken under the wing of a keen soldier who was rising quickly in the ranks, Ferdinand Marx. Marx and the future King became friends and adventured through the kingdom, until the end of the war.

Drought and Famine
About 25 years ago, a drought started that lasted two years. Between 1 and 6 years of famine followed, depending on where you lived in the kingdom. In areas where the famine lasted longer than a year, there were peasant revolts. Some took off, some didn't.
